Spring Break 2012: We're baaaaaaack

Hello all:
As I know most of you have been waiting with baited breath for about a year, we have decided to revive the blog for this year's disc golf trip. This year the cast is a littl e different, the crew will include: Returning discers- Drew and Louis. New additions Mike W., Shelby D., and last but certainly not least, Dan Schmidt.
This year we are heading to Bowling Green, KY for the Bowling Green Am. Championship. With over 650 competitors in attendance, it should be a blast! Per tradition, we are going to try and vary the author of the blog everyday and update scores throughout. Louis and Drew got an early start from God's country (Pulaski, VA) and will be arriving in KY this evening. Stay tuned for updates!

dark dark day

Well it has been several weeks since our last blog, mainly because drew is an apathetic sorry excuse for a friend/ambassador of disc. Unfortunately I am now writing because we all got the dreaded call from drew, that he aced, finally. Seeing as he has been playing disc for like 5 years you would think he would have managed to ace at least once. I mean for real the kid has no life and is always playing, so just the fact that he hadn't is a testament to how aweful he is. The best part about his supposed "ace" is that it didn't even happen with any of the four dudes so we are supposed to take his word for it, remember he is in school become a lawyer. Anyways to make a long story short drew finally aced even though it wasn't during a round, he basically threw his whole bag, and he has no credible witnesses.

day 6 or whatever recap as told by Will

Well yesterday was our last round at flyboy. As it was the day before, flyboy was a monster and it took me out behind the woodshed. I knew it was going to be a long day when on hole 3 I put it in the water on my third shot, then went to the drop zone and paid homage to the lake gods for the second consecutive shot. I tried to rally late in the round when I was already in the back of the pack but managed to blow that with a triple circle 9 on a par 4. Aka buzz your disc skills...WOOF! From there for me all hope was lost and the only thing that kept me from quiting early was the thought of a possible ace. On hole 24 I nearly did it just narrowly missing my first ace for the second time this trip. The best part about that hole was drew throwing out of bounds because he is terrible and I let him win this win every day on this trio so he would have something to live for. From there the round was basically over and there is nothing mire of note to speak of. After the round we took our three shots each at the basket on top of the hanger and I was the only one to be close to the ace because the three stooges aren't good. After we settled up with kelly for the two days we said our goodbyes and before we all left he gave us a sweet flyboy stamped disc. Once we left we hit up some food and the shennanigans began while zac drove. Drew and louis attempted to hang with me but I showed them how a real man does things. When we were about 45 minutes out from knoxville the executive decision was made not to stop for a bathroom break and to just use what we had at our disposal. After I had mcgivered it I passed the restroom on to the next person in line. I will not name such person but this next user had a mishap and needles to say we had to stop on the side of the road for an emegency change of clothes. Then once we got back on the road the search for a hotel began. I called several places and couldn't find a place grimy enough for us to afford, then there was denise. I talked to here several times with our conversations ranging from rates of the hotel to places that a group of gentlemen like us would go for entertainment. Once we got there we met sweet sweet denise. After checking in drew and I went to talk to denise to find out what there is to do in knoxville. At some point in the conversation we realized that something had gone wrong when she called her cousin asking if he knew any ladies of the night that would want to accompany us for the night. We averted that near crisis and went back to the room, got prepped for our night and walked to a restaurant next door. Then we ate and the rest of the night was rather uneventful except waking up at 3 am to family guy on stadium speakers blairing.

P.s. drew is still fully in love and heartbroken over pro shop girl. Just thought should be cleared up after his last post.

Day 5: Georgia On My Mind

First of all, sorry about the lack of a post last night, once we got to our destination in GA we were beat and neglected to recap our day so I’ll give a brief rundown now. After leaving the IDGC in Augusta/Appling, GA we left for Flyboy aviation on the far side of the state (about an hour west of Atlanta. We were ahead of schedule as we only played one course at the IDGC and decided to tour the building/hit on the girl working in the proshop (I thought I was in love for a few minutes but in hindsight It was just euphoria of the overall experience). We stopped in Douglasville, GA and played a course called "Deer Lick Park." The course was set in a busy public park with athletic fields, walking trails, tennis courts, putt putt, skate park, etc. making the frisbee throwing a little wild. The course was great as it combined short technical shots with some longer open shots. After Deer Lick we headed for the road and arrived at Flyboy Aviation in Whitesburg, GA as the sun was setting.

Flyboy is flat out amazing. First, the community that the Bed and Breakfast is set in is known as a "fly in community." If you are wondering what a "fly in community" is, as I was when I first heard of Flyboy, it is a gated community in which the homeowners own planes and have access to a grass runway which runs through the middle of the houses. If it sounds wild....I have described it correctly. Flyboy itself is what is known as a "hangar house." Imagine an airplane hangar with a house attached to the side, and you get a "hanger house."

Inside, the house is filled with various airplane related items and is honestly one of the coolest places I have ever been. I could talk about it for a long time but as a substitute, here is the link to the B & B: http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/41282 . The owner's name is Kelly, he is a pilot and avid disc golfer who lives in Atlanta and his parents Lillian and Wayne run and live at the Bed and Breakfast. They have been great and have taken very good care of us during our stay here.

As for the course itself, it is a 27 hole beast that has everything a disc golfer could want. There are tight holes that require technical precision, there are HUGE bombs that require tons of distance, and there are several lakes which test both guts and swimming ability. As a group we have played some of the best courses in the world (the Grange, Paw Paw, Maple Hill, etc) and Flyboy ranks right up there with the best, the hospitality of the bed and breakfast would put it at the top of the list in terms of experience for me. After our day we decided that we would stay another night at flyboy and attack the course again tomorrow.

Right Now, Will is sleeping after hitting the hay early; Zac, Lou and I are watching a little tv as we unwind. Reality will be here soon enough, but for now we are spending another night in disc golf heaven, enjoying each other’s company (for the most part), and hoping that we can keep our plastic out of the water tomorrow. We will try and update tomorrow at some point!

Until Then,

mid-day update day 4...as told by will

Well to start the day off I went to the contnental breakfast at the knights inn to find stale cereal and sticky buns, aka breakfast of champions. WINNER. We then went to walmart so that I could purchase something to clean out my nearly fatal foot wound. From there we stopped at the dollar store to purchase trinkets. We were off on our way to the International Disc Golf Center to dominate the courses. Once we arrived that plan was out the window. The course was awesome, it played through the woods and around a lake which today only zac managed to make it in. On the 9th hole I nearly went king kong (very crazy) due to the loss of my second vulcan in 2 days. Luckily for the idgc the disc appeared buried under some leaves, so crissis averted and again I am a winner. From there it was rather uneventful on the course but there were a few other things of note that happened at the proshop/hall off fame. First off I was guilted into making a purchase by the tthree stooges, aka drew lou and zac. Then my favorite moment of the day was drew realizing that he was attracted to the girl in the pro shop then proceeding to do nothing and failing at having any game. The only reason that he would have had a chance is because I played the wing man by comparrison by acting like a child and made him look acceptable, but there is only so much I can do. Then I got my ultimate win for the day so far by dominating the mens room at the hall of fame.WINNER. So all in all I couldn't ask for much more in a day; drew striking out with the opposite sex, me not losing my second vulcan, and dominating the idgc building with the force of 1000 bears drinking tiger's blood.

PS we will add pictures and update the rest of the day tonight, as for now we are headed to da ATL. Foreva I Love Atlanta (FILA)

Day 3 Mid-day update:

Hitting yall up as we head out of Rock Hill, SC after playing a round at famed Withrop Lake course. The Lake course overall is a great one with a good mixture of holes. The Lake course plays around a small lake that is surrounded by Winthrop University and the community giving anyone that plays some difficult shots. With four of the eighteen holes holes played we lost a combined five disc (Will 3, Drew 1, and I (Louis) 1). However, Will and Drew, hopped in the disc eating lake to pull whatever disc they could feel out but no success with the valkyrie I had roll in (R.I.P. valkyrie).

Aside from loading a disc the round at the lake was a solid one even though my +18 score does not say the same.
To brighten the mood I would like to hit on some highlights of the first half of the day. Steak and eggs for breakfast was definitely one of them follwed by an awesome visit to innova factory where we all bought a few sweet discs including a i-dyed valkyrie that looks like the American flag a.k.a. my replacement. Will had a solid +9 round with Drew only edging him out by two strokes at +7. Zac had a decent round as well and avoided the lake at all cost. We ended at hole eighteen and made it tougher by playing to the pin that was just below the tee box for hole five. Tougher being that the fairway up the hill has a grade that rolls straight to the lake (that's where the valkyrie rest). Once at the crest of the hill there lays a oak tree about 200ft ahead and the pin is nestled down from there a good 50 ft by the lake. Making approach and putt shots that much more nerve racking. To top our round of right Drew hit a 30ft putt towards the lake.

About an hour or so from our next stop we are going to try to get another round in. Until then stay fresh!

Day Two: Two States, Stinky Feet, and a Basket Hit!

Hello from the Palmetto state! Contrary to the very attractive picture seen to the left, day two was an absolutle blast. As noted in our mid day update we started the morning in Charlotte playing a great course, Hornets Nest DGC.

After Charlotte we decided to head south to Winthrop University to get settled in and play a "practice" round in preparation of our day there tomorrow. We will post an extensive review of the course but the quick and dirty: the course, which runs around Winthrop's athletic facilities, is awesome. The course has great variety, a little danger (see; the lake that ate two of our discs [Will's Firebird and Drew's Boss]), and lots of local "flavor." Also, the athletic facilities at Winthrop, along with Winthrop Lake are really really nice!

Today at the end of the round, we threw a couple of extra holes and had the most exciting throw of our trip thus far, Will hit the basket on hole 5 at Winthrop missing an ace by inches. Here is the Video:

We did not keep score in the afternoon round but expect the scores to be much lower tomorrow as compared to our moring round today (hornets nest gave us the business). The overall standings are as follows:

Drew-+21
Will-+36
Louis-+38
Zac-+40

The plan for tomorrow is to get a quick round at Winthrop and then head out to Augusta, GA to the International Disc Golf Center where we will be spending the night. We will update throughout the day tomorrow!

P.S. Here is a video of the winning CTP throw on 17 by Drew:
